At Tervisepoint, client safety is a top priority. In podiatry practice, instruments are used that come into contact with the skin, nails, and sometimes with minor skin micro-injuries. Therefore, proper sterilization of instruments is an essential part of a high-quality and safe service.
Sterilization helps prevent the spread of infectious diseases and ensures a high professional standard of podiatric care.
Why is instrument sterilization in podiatry so important?
- nail treatment
- removal of calluses and hyperkeratosis
- minor skin micro-injuries or slight bleeding
How is instrument sterilization carried out at Tervisepoint?
Physical cleaning
Each instrument is thoroughly cleaned of dirt, skin residues, and any possible blood.Disinfection in a solution
Instruments are placed in a professional disinfectant solution:- the exposure time depends on the manufacturer’s product
- usually 5–30 minutes
- then the instruments are rinsed (if necessary) and completely dried

Packaging and indicators
Instruments are packed in sterilization pouches with an indicator strip.
Sterilization in an autoclave
- high temperature, steam, and pressure
- the cycle duration is about 1 hour
- bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores are eliminated
Storage of sterile instruments
Instruments are stored in a dry and clean environment until use.
Even if a sterile instrument has not been used, it must be re-sterilized after 6 months. In this case, the instrument is removed from the packaging and undergoes cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization in an autoclave again.
What diseases can be transmitted through non-sterile instruments?
- hepatitis B and C
- HIV (low but possible risk)
- bacterial skin infections
- fungal infections of the nails and feet
- human papillomavirus (warts)
