Onycholysis (nail plate separation)
Onycholysis is a condition in which the nail partially or completely separates from the nail bed. A gap forms between the nail plate and the skin, which may change color over time and accumulate debris, keratinized tissue, or fungus. The causes of onycholysis can vary: trauma, frequent exposure to moisture or chemicals, fungal infection, psoriasis, eczema, improper pedicure, as well as thyroid disorders or the use of certain medications.
How the procedure is performed:
The specialist carefully examines the nail to assess the degree of separation and identify any associated issues (infection, trauma, deformation). The procedure then includes:
- gentle treatment: removal of the detached or damaged part of the nail plate;
- cleansing and disinfection of the nail bed;
- application of a therapeutic agent (e.g., antifungal or healing solution);
- if necessary, temporary reinforcement or protection of the nail bed using medical gels or coatings.
Benefits of the procedure:
For many people, it’s important to know how comfortable the procedure will be and how soon they can return to daily life.
- Painless, gentle, and safe
- Prevents age-related complications
- Suitable for chronic conditions (diabetes, varicose veins, arthritis)
- Improves walking comfort and overall well-being
- Essential care often lacking at home for elderly individuals
THE SPECIALIST ALSO EXPLAINS HOW TO CARE FOR THE NAIL AT HOME AND HOW TO PREVENT RECURRING SEPARATION.
How the problem is solved:
Removing the separated tissues and applying proper care help the nail grow back evenly, without deformities or inflammation. Treatment eliminates the risk of fungal infection and speeds up the healing of the nail bed.
